Japanese Switch eShop Adds IARC Ratings

The Japanese Nintendo eShop now supports IARC (the International Age Rating Coalition) ratings for Nintendo Switch releases.

The International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) was established in 2013 and provides a globally streamlined age classification process for digital games and mobile apps. The process requires developers to answer questions about content, with the answers then evaluated by the IARC and calculated into regional ratings which reflect local standards.

Download-only Nintendo Switch titles now no longer require a Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) rating, if the software has undergone an IARC review and has been subsequently rated by them. IARC ratings on the Switch eShop include 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+, and 18+. CERO ratings include A (all ages), B (12+), C (15+), D (17+), and Z (18+).

The only two titles at present to adopt the IARC ratings are the 2D action-RPG platformer The Legend of Ninja from Prison Games, which released yesterday, and has been given an IARC 12+ rating (Store page here), and the adorable puzzle game inbento from 7Levels, which releases on October 22, and has been given an IARC 3+ rating (Store page here).
