The Touch Battle Tank series is second only to the Denpa Ningen no RPG series in eShop series popularity in Japan. Playing much like a much faster (that part isn’t difficult) Kokuga but with controls somewhat reminiscent of Kid Icarus: Uprising and Liberation Maiden where you control your tank with the circle pad and the gun with the stylus. I actually found the controls rather easy, although having played the other two games certainly helps. Graphically Touch Battle Tank doesn’t at all look exciting although at least they are clear. The soundtrack is awful sounding like it’s from an equally awful gameshow. Gameplay wise, control a tank around 50 levels (plus unlockables) and defeat all enemy tanks.
Touch Battle Tank 3D begins being relatively fun although repetition does hit pretty soon. The lack of power-ups is also disconcerting (although it does feature a nifty R-Type-esque charge-shit). There are no bosses to add a little variety to the game (unlike in my Bomberman GB 3 review!) and some plays you are just raped into oblivion by a barrage of bullets. Despite all these negative aspects, Touch Battle Tank 3D isn’t inherently awful showing great promise, and it can provide some entertainment in short bursts. With over 100,000 eShop sales, surely Silver Star are doing something right. Although closing with ‘not as bad as Metacritic reviews imply’ is hardly the greatest tagline.
