Nintendo has revealed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 17.68 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2019. The number is the worldwide consolidated sales in units and includes the downloadable version.
Nintendo has updated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to Version 7.0.0 adding the new character Byleth (see this post), the new stage Garreg Mach Monastery, new Mii Fighter costumes (see this post), and nine new spirits (see this post). The Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is also available to pre-purchase priced at ¥3,300. Early purchasers will receive the Ancient Soldier Gear (pictured here). Full patch notes added below…
Nintendo Switch Online paid subscribers can download the Spirit Booster Bundle for a limited time for use in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The set contains 3000 SP, Snack (S) x100, Snack (M) x30, and Snack (L) x5. Users with a free trial cannot download the set.

Shuto “Shuton” Moriya won the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament at EVO Japan 2020, defeating Seisuke “Kome” Komeda in the finals. Shuton won a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with gold Smash logo, and a trophy which was presented to him by Masahiro Sakurai. Watch a brief clip below including Shuton hugging Sakurai!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Challenge Announced
Nintendo has announced a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Challenge for Japan, taking place for just two hours on Saturday February 1, 2020, from 19:00-21:00 JST. Matches will be 1 on 1 rules with players scores starting at 15,000. The top 8 players will be invited to compete in the finals on Monday February 24, 2020, which will be broadcast on YouTube Live and OPENREC.tv.
Nintendo have announced a Kunio-kun themed “River City Smash” spirit event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate beginning this Friday (24 January) and lasting for five days featuring four spirits from the Kunio-kun universe. Defeat them in battle to earn more gold than usual. The prize money for EVO Japan 2020 has been revealed with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the only game not to have a cash prize (a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with gold Smash logo). BLAZBLUE CROSS TAG BATTLE, SAMURAI SPIRITS, and SOULCALIBUR VI winners each get ¥500,000 ($4,538), whilst Street Fighter V Arcade Edition and Tekken 7 winners each get ¥1,000,000 ($9,075). Nintendo have announced that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Elementary School Tournament and Junior High School Tournament will both be returning in 2020 in five districts (Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo) from May through August.
