niconico thoughts

Back on Valentine’s Day niconico (literally translated as ‘Smile’) launched as a free app on the Japanese 3DS eShop. Basically a video app similar to YouTube but with the most amazing interface. First things first you need a niconico account (go to http://www.nicovideo.jp/ on your PC/Mac/Tablet etc and create one in English) then when loading up the app on your 3DS you will be prompted for what I assumed to be my username. It is not! Type in your email address and password then voila! After a fun instructional you then select your Mii from those on your 3DS and the fun and games begin.

The most popular videos available to view (there are apparently limitations to the free account although I haven’t encountered any problems thus far) are documented plus a search option (unfortunately most uploads are in Japanese). The most fun aspect of niconico is the StreetPassing feature where your Mii holds a placard with his/her most recent video and StreetPass other users and view their placards. The animation is astounding giving a true Tomodachi Collection vibe to proceedings. My Mii’s face after not StreetPassing anyone is hilariously harrowing! As a free app, niconico is an absolute must download and a credit to the 3DS.
