New Horizons Development Began Shortly After New Leaf
In an interview with The Washington Post, Animal Crossing: New Horizons director Aya Kyogoku and producer Hisashi Nogami revealed that the game’s deserted island concept came right after the Japanese release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf for Nintendo 3DS in November 2012, with early development beginning shortly after before they began “thinking or knowing about Nintendo Switch hardware.” The game’s avatar options allow players not to think about gender, although still works to players who do so. Kyogoku and Nogami are still working in the company’s offices but are willing to be “flexible” if the need arises.
