Nintendo Switch Sales Top 60m
Nintendo have revealed that the Nintendo Switch family of systems has now sold 61.44 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2020.
The 61.44 million number above is for both the original Nintendo Switch model that initially launched on March 3, 2017 (and which also includes the updated SKU with the improved battery life that became available around mid August 2019) and the Nintendo Switch Lite system which launched on September 20, 2019. The number is also for worldwide consolidated sales in units life-to-date. A further 5.68 million systems were sold in the last quarter.
Continued success of Nintendo Switch hardware and software saw Nintendo’s dedicated video game business grow by 113.2% year-on-year to 344.5 billion yen. Net sales for the first quarter also rose by 108.1% with operating profit rising by 427.7%, ordinary profit rising by 576.2%, and net profit attributable to owners of parent rising by 541.3%, in what has to be considered a hugely successful 1st Quarter Results for Fiscal Year Ending March 2021 for the company.
Total Switch software sales now stand at 406.67 million units, and overtook sales on the Nintendo 3DS, Super Famicom, and Game Boy Advance platforms over the last quarter, which also saw nine million sellers including Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (1.32 million units), and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (1.03 million units). However, the software numbers are still considerably lower than both Wii and Nintendo DS (each at over 900 million units).
Nintendo Switch hardware numbers are also considerably lower than the Nintendo DS (154.02 million units) and Wii (101.63 million units), although the system is likely to overtake the Famicom (61.91 million units) in hardware sales over the next quarter. 3DS hardware sales have stagnated and now stand at 75.87 million units, with just 100,000 units sold over the last quarter.
