Japanese Nintendo Mailbag #5!

Welcome to our fifth Mailbag post where I answer questions asking my thoughts on Virtual Console for Switch, PSO2, Sonic Forces, non-Nintendo consoles and Mario & Luigi! Ask me questions on Tumblr or over on my Twitter! Image above ‘stolen; from here.

Do you think Virtual Console will come to Switch?

A great question and one where my opinion has changed this year. Nintendo’s dedication to the Virtual Console has certainly wavered since the peak of the Wii years with the Wii U’s library pale in comparison and 3DS’s output often barren for months at a time.

Nintendo also seem to be exploring new avenues to maximise profit from past games with the Nintendo Classic Mini series, Arcade Archives service and the future plans for the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service all look like continuing into 2018 and beyond.

Other companies too such as Square-Enix with Seiken Densetsu Collection, Bandai Namco Entertainment with Namco Museum and Arc System Works with Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection have bypassed the Virtual Console with packaged versions of older titles.

So to return to your question; no, I no longer am as convinced that Virtual Console will be coming to Switch. Nintendo’s priorities now seem to be towards re-releasing these games on dedicated physical media (Nintendo Classic Mini) or in using (Online) subscription models.

What do you think of Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to Nintendo Switch in a cloud game format? Are you going to try it out?

I’m really pleased anytime I hear of a major company bringing a game to Nintendo Switch. I’m nervous of the cloud format from past experience of purchasing Dragon Quest X for 3DS and it’s poor performance. But yes, I’m going to try it out!

Will you be getting Sonic Forces? What do you think of the game so far?

I’ve never been the biggest Sonic fan ever since I joined the console warz back in the 90′s! I don’t have such bias nowadays, however I am SO bad at Sonic when playing both the 3D Classics and Mania. Sonic Forces looks great in screenshots but I trust PushDustIn’s opinion when he says it doesn’t play as good.

Do you play games on anything other than Nintendo?

Unfortunately I barely have time to play Nintendo as much as I’d like! I do have a PC Engine and Mega Drive that I still play (especially the PC Engine which I collect games for!). Other than that, I own most portable consoles with the PC Engine GT being my favourite!

What do you honestly think about the Mario & Luigi 3DS remake?

I thought it was a strange choice for a remake to be honest. That being said, it does look great and I’m sure plays well too. I am disappointed that this (and many other new 3DS games) don’t support sterescopic 3D though.
