The Japanese 3DS Games of the Year

10. Rhythm Tengoku The ★ Best +

Not a completely new game but plays like a best of with plenty of new content on top. When it’s good it feels like there’s absolutely nothing better.

09. Nashijiru Action! Funassyi no Yukai na Ohanassyi

So overlooked but a really fun action platformer with great level design and difficulty curve that wouldn’t feel out of place on the Sega Master System.

08. Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Airou Village DX

Plays more like an Animal Crossing or a Fantasy Life than core Monster Hunter but is still true to the Monster Hunter universe and ungodly cute too!

07. Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki

Nothing really new (other than swords!) and it’s repetitive by design but the latest Kunio-kun game is pure fun throughout which surely is one of the goals of gaming.

06. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D

The second Grezzo remake on 3DS and just like Ocarina of Time feels like it was almost designed for portable play although unlike OoT I still haven’t finished the darn game!

05. Bravely Second: End Layer

Utilises many assets from the first game and perhaps deservedly condemned for doing so but overlook the lack of originality and it’s one of the JRPG’s of the year.

04. Yokai Watch Busters

I’m unsure whether this will ever release in the West due to the constant Ghostbusters plagiarism but an amazing fun multiplayer action game that gets tough all too quickly.

03. The Battle Cats

Like video game meth with such a simple premise (destroy enemy’s tower whilst preserving yours) but is jam-packed with content and is as addictive as almost every retail game.

02. Monster Hunter X

If 4G improves on 4 then X improves on the whole Monster Hunter concept in absolutely every single way other than perhaps story. Just cancel all social engagements.

01. Fire Emblem if

Quite simply everything that I look for in a videogame with brilliant story, amazing aesthetics, awesome design and just pure fun to play throughout. Expect a full review later today.

* Please note I’ve excluded compilations (Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2) and New Nintendo 3DS exclusives (Xenoblade 3D) from the list.

** Bubbling under games include 7th Dragon III code:VFD, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Code Name S.T.E.A.M., Monster Strike and Tatakae Butasan
